Python 3.10 Deprecation for Streamlit Data Apps

Streamlit data apps still running on Python 3.10 need to move to a newer backend version. The default switches to Python 3.11 on 24 September 2026, and the Python 3.10 image will stop receiving fixes.

We would like to inform you that Python 3.10 is being deprecated for Streamlit data apps. Python 3.10 is reaching end of life, and libraries across the Python ecosystem are already dropping support for it, so continuing to run on it would mean falling behind on security patches and package updates.

To keep your apps on a supported, patched runtime, we have released new 2.0.0 backend images built on Python 3.11 and Python 3.13. Both are already available in the Backend Version dropdown when you start or redeploy a Streamlit app.

What is changing

  • Python 3.10 backend versions will no longer receive fixes or package updates, and no Python 3.10 variant of 2.0.0 will be released.
  • New 2.0.0 images are available for Python 3.11 and Python 3.13. Streamlit itself stays on 1.51—the major version reflects a rebuilt image base, not a Streamlit upgrade.
  • On 24 September 2026, the default backend version switches from Python 3.10 to Python 3.11.

Why the change?

  • Continued security and library support: Python 3.11 and 3.13 keep receiving upstream fixes; Python 3.10 does not.
  • Better performance: Python 3.11 is typically 10–60% faster than 3.10 on the same workload, and Python 3.13 is faster still.
  • Fewer surprises later: Moving now means your dependencies stay installable as maintainers drop 3.10 support.

What you need to do

  1. Open your Streamlit data app and pick a Python 3.11 or Python 3.13 backend version from the Backend Version dropdown. We recommend 2.0.0 - Python 3.11 + Streamlit 1.51 as the closest match to the current default.
  2. Restart the app and verify it starts and behaves as expected.
  3. If a package in your Packages field or requirements.txt fails to install or breaks, check for a newer release of that package supporting Python 3.11 or 3.13, and update the pinned version.

Apps already on Python 3.10 will keep running after 24 September 2026, but on an unmaintained image—we strongly recommend moving before then. Testing early gives you time to resolve any package incompatibilities without pressure.

If you need more time, select 1.18.0 - Python 3.10 + Streamlit 1.51 (pinned to Python 3.10) in the dropdown. Your app will then stay on Python 3.10 when the default changes, instead of following it—but it will not receive further updates, so treat this as a temporary measure.

If you run into problems moving an app to the new backend, our support team is here to help—please submit a support ticket and we will work through it with you.
