Introducing Data Gateway Component
The Data Gateway component is now available, allowing you to share data with third-party BI tools via a read-only Snowflake schema. This component uses Key Pair authentication and is the recommended solution for connecting BI tools for projects using Keboola's shared database.
We're excited to announce the production release of the Data Gateway component. This new application makes it easy to connect your favorite BI and visualization tools directly to your Keboola data.
What Is Data Gateway?
Data Gateway shares your Keboola Storage tables in read-only mode with third-party tools. It creates a separate Snowflake schema outside Keboola's shared database, giving your BI tools secure access to fresh data without compromising your main environment. The component uses Snowflake's reader account technology. This means your data stays secure while remaining accessible to authorized tools.
Why Does This Matter?
As announced in our recent timeline update and described in our documentation, Multi-tenant and Pay-As-You-Go customers will lose direct access to Snowflake workspaces by the end of the year 2025. Data Gateway is the recommended replacement for connecting BI tools to your projects. The component uses Key Pair authentication, which is more secure than traditional password authentication and aligns with Snowflake's latest security standards.
Key Features
- Read-only access for safe data sharing
- Column-level control to customize which data you share
- Easy migration from existing Snowflake Writer configurations
- Secure Key Pair authentication
Getting Started
- Create a new Data Gateway configuration in your project
- Set up credentials and download your private key
- Add tables you want to share
- Run the component to load data to the read-only workspace
- Connect your BI tool using the provided credentials
For detailed instructions, see our Data Gateway documentation.
Who Should Use This?
- Multi-tenant/Pay-As-You-Go customers: This is your primary path for connecting BI tools after December 2025
- Keboola-Brings-Database/Bring-Your-Own-Database customers: Optional, but may increase costs since it spins up an additional warehouse
- Note that customers using dedicated Snowflake Account need to give necessary privileges to root Keboola database user, as described in our documentation.
Billing of the Component
Usage of the Data Gateway component will be billed in the same way as DWH Direct Query using small Warehouse - 8 Credits per hour of queries run in the associated schema.
Billing for this component will begin on November 24, giving users time to test it before charges apply.
