Data Gateway Billing Changed to Volume-Based
Data Gateway component jobs (data writes) are now billed by data volume (0.2 PPU/GB) instead of runtime, matching the Snowflake Writer billing. Job runs in January are free.
What's changed
- Data Gateway component jobs will be billed at 0.2 PPU per GB of transferred data (previously: billed by runtime)
- Billing starts February 1, 2026
- Your Data Gateway jobs run in January are free
- SQL queries against the Data Gateway workspace remain with no changes - when you query data from Power BI, Tableau, or other tools, billing continues the same way as it did with Snowflake Writer Direct Queries
Who is affected
- ✅ Contract customers with Data Gateway configurations in projects with Snowflake backend.
- ❌ Pay-As-You-Go projects are not affected - they continue using time-based billing.
What you need to do
Nothing. The billing change is automatic. You may review your Telemetry dashboard after the retroactive adjustment in two to three days.
Why we made this change
Runtime-based billing caused unexpected credit increases for users who migrated from Snowflake Writer due to Snowflake's access policy changes. You were suddenly optimizing for runtime instead of data volume - an additional burden during an already challenging transition. We're restoring volume-based billing to match Snowflake Writer while keeping Data Gateway's new features like Clone load available.
